“MAKE OUR CHURCH ONE JOYFUL CHOIR”

The Traditional Music Ministry of Oak Grove United Methodist Church

CHILDREN’S and YOUTH CHOIRS

Angel Choir: 3 & 4 years old by 09/01/2016

Registration for the Angel Choir (3 & 4 year olds) is closed. We thank you for your interest in joining, however due to overwhelming response we are unable to accommodate the children until Fall 2017.  We hope to see you then!

Wednesday: 6:15-7:00 pm
Room: 212
Amanda Price, conductor
Lilly Kersh, music assistant
Jan Appling, accompanist

This introductory choir explores basic musical concepts to begin their journey through learning about steady beat, soft and loud, sound and silence, high and low, and investigates their gift of singing and movement, while learning worship readiness skills. Because music is one of the best vehicles for early childhood learning, this experience will also include basic fundamentals of music such as echo singing, rhythm patterns, and the introduction of musical instruments.

CHERUB CHOIR: 5 years old by 09/01/2016

Wednesday: 6:15-7:00 pm
Room: 214
Sally Chapman-Phillips, conductor
Lindsay Garlinghouse, accompanist

This time of celebration provides creative ways to build on concepts learned in the Angel Choir. Mirrors for learning vowel formations, recognizing and designing musical symbols, developing listening skills, rhythm exploration with instruments, beginning note reading, and to top it off, a “slide whistle” choir, are all elements of an exciting time together. Learning to participate in worship is an integral part of an adventure which leads to God.

CELEBRATE CHOIR: Grades 1 and 2

Wednesday: 6:15-7:00 p.m.
Room: 202
Maris Mann, conductor
Robyn Sjogren, assistant conductor

This musical experience advances on the fundamentals of music learned in Cherub Choir. These first and second graders continue learning to read the musical score, music notation and basic terminology of music. They develop vocally as both an ensemble and as a “budding” soloist. Choristers will be exposed to Orff instruments and tone chimes. They will sing an act of service to share God’s gift of music with others (Senior Living Care Communities), and participate in worship during the year.

MUSIC MAKERS: Grades 3-5

Wednesday: 6:15-7:00 p.m.
Room: Parlor
Cathy Ethridge, conductor
Lori DeLange, assistant conductor
Leanne Herrmann, accompanist

This setting will build on the musical fundamentals and vocal production learned in the Celebrate Choir. These choristers will add sight-reading and part-singing to their musical skill set and experience God’s love for them through the singing of hymns and anthems. Rehearsals will incorporate the use of tone chimes and handbells to enhance sight-reading and rhythm abilities. This choir will certainly enhance our worship services on several occasions this year.

YOUTH CHOIR: Grades 6-12

Sunday: 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Room: Choral Suite (201) / Sanctuary
Edgar Scruggs, conductor
Leanne Herrmann, accompanist

The Youth Choir from Oak Grove UMC has a tradition of excellence. This ensemble gives our young people the opportunity to share Christ through Music and Missions and develop a life-long love for this genre of the musical arts building on musical skills developed in our children’s choir program. While the concept of “Youth Choir” is almost extinct in many churches, this choir is an integral part of the Music Ministry at Oak Grove. This yearly “Music Mission Tour” is supported by our congregation through the United Methodist Men’s BBQ, our annual Golf Tournament, grants, and many individual gifts. This allows these young people to travel extensively in the US singing the praises of their God. Our experiences shared in missions have been life changing, and we always leave with full hearts and a desire to give even more of ourselves.
