How to Get Started
All volunteers must complete a brief application, orientation, and required child safety training before their first volunteer assignment. These steps protect the children in our care and help you feel fully prepared and supported in your role.
About Darkness to Light Training
All Children’s Ministry volunteers and staff members are required to complete Darkness to Light (Stewards of Children) training, a nationally recognized child sexual abuse prevention program, before volunteering in any capacity with children.
- The 2.5 hour training is offered online and in person throughout the year.
- If you’ve previously completed Darkness to Light training, please include your completion date in your volunteer application.
- This training is renewed every 3 years.

Volunteer FAQs
Do I need to be a church member to volunteer?
No, membership is not required. However, all volunteers must be involved with Oak Grove for at least 6 months before you can be involved in any activity involving a minor. All volunteers must complete the required application, orientation, and training.
How often would I need to volunteer?
It depends on your role. Sunday School teachers typically commit to one Sunday per month within their committed school year; we ask that teachers serve at least 7 times during the school year. Event volunteers sign up per event.
What if I’ve never worked with children before?
No prior experience is needed — just a willingness to show up and connect. Our team provides training, materials, and support.
Is there a background check?
Yes. All volunteers working with minors complete a background check as part of the application process.
