Welcome to Senior Adult Ministry at Oak Grove United Methodist Church! We are glad you found us. Whether you are new to the community or have been around a while, we hope you can find a way to connect with us in a way that is meaningful for you. In addition to all the happenings in the broader church, our older adults at OGUMC participate in social gatherings, educational outings, learning opportunities, mission work, intergenerational gatherings, Bible studies, prayer ministries, and more! Lunch Bunch
Once a month, we gather for lunch, fellowship, and an engaging program on campus. We have heard from church members, church staff, local musicians and storytellers, and leaders in the community. Topics for our lunch programs may be entertaining, educational, or faith-based.
Intergenerational
We partner with the Youth Ministry and the Children’s Ministry throughout the year to spend time in fellowship together and get to know each other. Our Missions Ministry is instrumental in creating intergenerational opportunities for us to serve in community with others. Intergenerational activities are important in the life of the church. It lets us know what is happening in other parts of our church community. Forming these relationships helps young people stay connected to their faith community. It also increases compassion and empathy for those outside of our circles.
Other Programs
We also offer special programs throughout the year. Annually, we recognize our eldest members in a special worship service, Celebration of Wisdom and Grace. In the past, we have hosted Andy Offutt Irwin, Georgia native storyteller and songwriter, welcomed organizations to our campus for our annual resource and information fair, and gathered for ice cream, fellowship, and games.
Outings
A few times a year, we head off campus to visit a local or regional site of interest to the community. We have been to historic homes in the Atlanta area, Hollywood of the South, Atlanta History Center, Fernbank, Monastery of the Holy Spirit, and more!
Mission and Lay Ministry Programs
Our senior adults also play a key role in many of our missional activities, such as Feed My Starving Children, Hinton Rural Life Center, our annual Spooky to be Hungry food drive for Toco Hills Community Alliance, and the infamous Oak Grove UMC annual barbeque, which raises money to support our missions and ministries throughout the year. Several of our older adults take time to visit our homebound members as well as prepare and deliver meals to members who are experiencing a difficult time. We also have a dedicated group called “Needles and Prayers” who gather once a month to work on projects to offer comfort to a wide range of recipients. Our “Prayers and Squares” group uses its gifts and talents to make prayer quilts for members who are in the midst of a health or other crisis.
